Leicester City shocks the Football world

How can I have a blog and not write about football?

Sit back, relax and read about one of the biggest shocks in football or any sport for that matter.

I have been watching English football for about 17 years now and what happened in 2016 can be described as one of the greatest sporting stories of all time, Leicester City were confirmed as champions of the Premier League for the first time in the club's history.

The previous season, Leicester was bottom of the table for most of the year and on the brink of relegation.  Seven wins in the last nine matches saved them from relegation and helped them regain their spot in the English top flight.

At the beginning of 2015 – 16 season, Leicester City was given odds of 5000-1 to win the Premier League. There was a stronger possibility of Elvis Presley being found alive, so you can imagine the disbelief across the sporting world when this farfetched dream became a reality.

Was it the Manager?
Leicester City turned to Claudio Ranieri after the departure of Nigel Pearson. The charming Italian had managed some of the most illustrious clubs in the world - the likes of Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan to name a few. Ranieri's reputation in England had been partially damaged during his final months as Chelsea manager in 2004 but his overall record, however, was fantastic. Even though all his teams challenged for the trophies in EPL, Serie A and La Liga, he’d never won a title before.

Was it the Players?
Nobody had heard the likes of Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante because Leicester was always languishing in the second – tier of English football. But what this group went out on the field and proved is that you don’t need a world – class coach, you don’t need the big names in football, you don’t need the oil money but you can still conquer your dreams with sheer determination and team spirit by playing unorthodox counter – attacking football.

Was it the Fans?
132 – year old history of the club and the fans never gave up. They cheered their lads through hardships and successes. The atmosphere at King Power stadium was emphatic every single home game of that season. Of course, thousands travelled for away games to show support and applaud their team.

What’s so great about Leicester’s win?
Well, no sports team has defied such odds to triumph and Leicester's improbable success has sent shockwaves across the world. From relegation to champions of England happens maybe only once in a century. 23 wins, 12 draws and only 3 losses. They finished the league with 81 points; more than 10 points clear of the elite clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Check out the below video when Eden Hazard's goal crowned Leicester as Champions of England.
